For Grill Method
- 4 cups trimmed fresh green beans (cut as desired)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare green beans: Rinse and trim the green beans according to your preference, cutting them if desired.
- Skillet method - Heat fats: In a large, shallow pan set over medium-high heat, melt the butter together with olive oil until hot and shimmering.
- Cook green beans: Add the green beans to the pan and stir frequently, cooking them for about 4 minutes to start tenderizing.
- Add garlic and spices: Stir in the minced fresh garlic and red pepper flakes if using, mixing well to distribute the flavors evenly.
- Add water and cover: Pour in the water and cover the pan with a lid to steam the beans for 4 to 5 minutes, or until they reach your preferred doneness.
- Remove cover and brown: Take off the lid, increase the heat to high, and continue stirring constantly until the water evaporates and some beans begin to brown and caramelize slightly.
- Season and serve: Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste, toss lightly, and serve the beans immediately to enjoy their fresh and savory flavor.
- Grill method - Prepare beans: Toss the trimmed green beans with olive oil, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired, ensuring the beans are evenly coated.
- Grill beans: Place the beans in a high-sided grill pan with holes over medium-high heat, grilling for about 10 minutes. Toss frequently and allow some beans to char slightly for a smoky depth of flavor.
- Finish and serve: Remove from the grill once tender and slightly charred, then serve hot as a delightful side dish.
Notes
- Optional red pepper flakes add a spicy kick; omit if you prefer a milder taste.
- Adjust cooking times based on how crisp or tender you like your green beans.
- Using fresh minced garlic provides the best flavor, but garlic powder can be substituted in a pinch.
- For a vegan version, use olive oil only and omit butter in the skillet method.
- Grilling adds a smoky flavor that pairs well with grilled meats and BBQ dishes.
