Ingredients
Apples
- 6 cups diced apples (4-5 large Honeycrisp, unpeeled)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Topping
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted (1 stick)
- 1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's perfectly heated for baking the crisp evenly.
- Mix Apple Filling: In a large bowl, toss the diced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour until the apples are thoroughly coated. Transfer this mixture into a 9×9 inch baking dish or a cast-iron skillet for even cooking.
- Mix Topping: In another large bowl, combine the melted salted butter, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir well with a spoon or fork until the mixture forms a crumbly texture. Use your hands if needed to bring the topping together. Evenly distribute this crumble over the apple mixture in the pan.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. Bake until the apples are soft and jammy around the edges and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes so the apple filling thickens slightly. Serve warm, ideally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a perfect finish.
Notes
- Use firm, tart apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor.
- You can peel the apples if preferred, but unpeeled adds extra texture and nutrients.
- Feel free to add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the topping for added crunch.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free oats and flour alternatives.
