Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 Tbsp. sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1/2 large white onion, diced small
- 2 tsp. garlic, minced (about 2 cloves)
- 2 green onions, chopped
- Noodles of choice (ramen noodles, rice noodles, egg noodles, etc.)
Sauce
- 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. mirin
- 1 tsp. fresh ginger, minced
- 1 tsp. hoisin sauce
- 1 tsp. fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp. Sriracha (optional)
Garnishes (optional)
- Finely sliced green onions
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl or mason jar, combine 2 Tbsp. soy sauce, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 1/2 Tbsp. mirin, 1 tsp. fresh minced ginger, 1 tsp. hoisin sauce, 1 tsp. fish sauce, and 1 Tbsp. Sriracha if using. Stir or shake to mix well and set aside.
- Cook Aromatics: Heat 1 Tbsp. sesame oil and 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil together in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced 1/2 large white onion and 2 tsp. minced garlic. Stir frequently and cook about 5 minutes until onions are tender and fragrant.
- Brown the Ground Beef: Add 1 lb. ground beef to the skillet. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon and cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Sauce and Green Onions: Pour the prepared sauce over the browned beef. Add the chopped 2 green onions and stir well. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, cooking for 2-3 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
- Prepare Noodles: Meanwhile, cook your noodles of choice according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.
- Serve: Remove the beef mixture from heat. Serve immediately over the prepared noodles. Garnish with extra sliced green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes if desired.
Notes
- You can use any type of noodles for this dish—ramen, rice noodles, or egg noodles all work wonderfully.
- Adjust the level of spice by modifying or omitting the Sriracha.
- For an extra depth of flavor, you can add a splash of rice vinegar to the sauce.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave.
- To keep it gluten-free, ensure soy sauce is tamari or gluten-free soy sauce.
