This BBQ Grilled Chicken Breasts recipe features juicy, tender chicken breasts marinated in a flavorful blend of spices and coated with tangy BBQ sauce. Quickly grilled to perfection, it's a perfect weeknight dinner that’s packed with smoky, savory goodness and ideal for summer cookouts or any occasion.

  • Total Time: 21 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chicken and Marinade

  • 2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (6-8 oz each, about 1-1½ lbs total)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons avocado or vegetable oil

Sauce

  • ½ cup BBQ sauce (plus extra for serving, if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to high heat, aiming for a temperature between 450-500°F to ensure a perfect sear on the chicken breasts.
  2. Pound the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound them with a mallet or rolling pin until they are an even thickness of about ½ inch, which helps them cook evenly. Transfer the chicken to a bowl or shallow dish.
  3. Make the Spice Mix: In a small bowl, combine the kosher salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and chili powder to create a flavorful spice blend.
  4. Coat the Chicken: Drizzle the avocado or vegetable oil over the chicken breasts and rub to coat them evenly. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the chicken and toss thoroughly to ensure every piece is well seasoned.
  5. Grill First Side: Place the chicken breasts onto the hot grill and close the lid. Grill for 4-6 minutes on the first side until the chicken releases easily from the grill grates.
  6. Flip and Sauce: Flip the chicken breasts and brush the top side with half of the BBQ sauce. Cover the grill and cook for another 4-6 minutes until this side releases easily. At this point, reduce the heat to medium.
  7. Final Flip and Caramelize: Flip the chicken once more and brush with the remaining BBQ sauce. Cook for an additional 2-4 minutes to allow the sauce to caramelize and the chicken to reach an internal temperature of 165°F, ensuring it’s fully cooked.
  8. Rest and Serve: Remove the grilled chicken from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes to allow juices to redistribute. Slice and serve with extra BBQ sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For even cooking, make sure chicken breasts are pounded to an even thickness.
  • Use a meat thermometer to confirm an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption.
  • If you don’t have a grill, you can use a grill pan on the stovetop over medium-high heat.
  • Adjust chili powder for more or less spice according to your taste preference.
  • Resting the chicken after grilling helps retain juiciness.
