Ingredients
Marinade
- 4 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1-2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean fermented chili paste)
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (or brown sugar)
- 1 teaspoon fresh chopped ginger
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 green onions, minced
- 1 Asian pear, peeled and minced (optional)
- 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes (Gochugaru - Korean red pepper flakes preferred)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 spicy red pepper, minced (optional, for hotter bulgogi sauce)
Beef
- 1.5 pounds ribeye steak, thinly sliced or cubed (other cuts of beef can be used as alternatives)
For Serving
- Spicy red pepper flakes
- Sliced green onion
- Sliced hot peppers
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Hot sauce to taste
Instructions
- Make Marinade: Whisk together all bulgogi sauce ingredients in a large bowl until evenly combined. If using the Asian pear, blend all marinade ingredients in a blender for a smoother texture.
- Marinate Beef: Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak into the marinade ensuring all pieces are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably overnight, to deeply infuse the flavors.
- Cook Beef: Preheat a grill, cast iron grill pan, or wok over medium-high heat and lightly oil the surface. Grill or stir-fry the beef for about 5 to 6 minutes for medium-rare, stirring or flipping frequently to cook evenly. Cook longer if you prefer your meat more done.
- Garnish and Serve: Transfer the cooked beef to a serving dish, then garnish with sliced green onions, sliced hot peppers, red chili flakes, and toasted sesame seeds. Add hot sauce if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy the vibrant flavors of homemade Korean BBQ beef.
Notes
- Using Asian pear in the marinade adds natural sweetness and tenderizes the beef, but this step is optional.
- For different textures or budget-friendly options, other cuts of beef like sirloin or flank steak can be used instead of ribeye.
- Marinate beef overnight for more intense flavor and tenderness.
- If you prefer less heat, reduce or omit the spicy red pepper and red pepper flakes.
- This recipe works well with both grilling and stir-frying methods depending on your equipment and preference.
