Ingredients
Cake
- One 9×13 chocolate cake or brownie, baked according to package or recipe directions (or use homemade easy chocolate sheet cake recipe)
Cherry Filling
- 30 ounces cherry pie filling (approx 2 cups), store bought or homemade
- 4 ounces kirsch or cherry brandy (any cherry liqueur or amaretto; substitute cherry juice for non-alcoholic version)
Chocolate Pudding
- 2 boxes chocolate pudding (90 grams each), prepared according to directions or homemade version
Whipped Cream
- 1 ½ cups cold heavy whipping cream or double cream
- 2-4 tablespoons (15-30 grams) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- OR 3 cups whipped topping, defrosted
Garnishing
- Fresh cherries
- Shaved chocolate
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Icing sugar or cocoa powder for dusting
Instructions
- Bake the Cake: Prepare the chocolate cake according to package instructions or a homemade recipe, then allow it to cool completely. Once cooled, cut the cake into 1-inch cubes for layering.
- Prepare the Pudding: Make the chocolate pudding following package directions or using a homemade recipe. Stir well and let it cool to room temperature before assembling.
- Make the Whipped Cream: In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer with a whisk attachment, combine cold heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Start mixing on low speed. When the mixture begins to thicken and soft peaks form, increase speed to medium-high until stiff peaks develop.
- Assemble the Trifle: In a 9-inch trifle bowl, place half of the cake cubes evenly at the bottom and gently press them down. Drizzle half of the kirsch (or cherry juice) evenly over the cake. Spoon half of the chocolate pudding on top of the cake layer, followed by half of the cherry pie filling, and then spread half of the whipped cream. Repeat these layers with remaining cake, kirsch, pudding, cherries, and finish with a thick layer of whipped cream on top.
- Chill and Garnish: Cover the trifle and refrigerate for 1 to 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld and cake to soften. Before serving, garnish with fresh cherries, shaved chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, and optionally dust with icing sugar or cocoa powder. Serve chilled for best taste.
Notes
- Use cherry juice instead of kirsch for a non-alcoholic version.
- For quicker preparation, use store-bought cake, pudding, and pie filling.
- Allowing the trifle to chill overnight improves flavor and texture.
- Fresh cherries add beautiful color and freshness as garnish.
- The whipped cream can be substituted with defrosted whipped topping for convenience.
