A simple, homemade blackberry syrup bursting with fresh berry flavor, perfect for sweetening beverages, drizzling over desserts, or adding a fruity twist to cocktails. Made with just blackberries, sugar, water, and a hint of lemon juice, this syrup is easy to prepare and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups (approximately 2 servings)

Ingredients

Blackberry Syrup Ingredients

  • 2 cups blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add 2 cups blackberries, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water, and 1 teaspoon lemon juice, if using, to a medium-sized pot over medium heat.
  2. Simmer Mixture: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the sugar has dissolved and the berries have softened and started breaking apart, about 10 minutes.
  3. Cool the Syrup: Remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for 20 minutes to help intensify the flavors and make straining easier.
  4. Strain Mixture: Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing to extract as much juice as possible from the softened berries.
  5. Store Syrup: Transfer the strained syrup into a clean bottle or jar using a funnel if necessary. Let the syrup cool completely before sealing and refrigerating. Store for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • The lemon juice is optional but adds a bright acidity that balances the sweetness and helps preserve the syrup.
  • You can adjust the sugar amount depending on your preferred level of sweetness.
  • Use fresh or frozen blackberries; if using frozen, no need to thaw before cooking.
  • The syrup can be used in cocktails, lemonades, iced teas, or as a topping for pancakes and desserts.
  • Make sure to store the syrup in the refrigerator and use within two weeks for best freshness.
