Ingredients
Ingredients
- 16 ounce mini pretzel twists
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, sliced into pats
- 5 tablespoons light corn syrup (not dark corn syrup)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 8 ounce package Heath English toffee bits, divided
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 200°F. Line a baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil and generously spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Place Pretzels in Bowl: Pour the 16 ounces of mini pretzel twists into a large heat-safe mixing bowl, ready to be coated with the toffee mixture.
- Make Toffee Sauce: In a 3 to 4 quart saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup light brown sugar, ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter sliced into pats, and 5 tablespoons light corn syrup. Stir constantly and bring the mixture to a low boil. Allow it to boil for 5 minutes while continuing to stir to prevent burning.
- Add Vanilla and Baking Soda: Remove the saucepan from heat. Carefully stir in 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract and ½ teaspoon baking soda. Be cautious as the mixture will bubble up and thicken rapidly.
- Coat Pretzels: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture over the pretzels in the bowl. Using a wooden spoon or silicone spatula, gently stir until all pretzels are thoroughly coated.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet and Add Toffee Bits: Spread the coated pretzels evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle half of the 8-ounce package of Heath English toffee bits over the top of the coated pretzels.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour, stirring and turning the toffee pretzels every 15 minutes to ensure even baking and coating.
- Add Remaining Toffee Bits: Immediately after removing the pretzels from the oven, sprinkle the remaining Heath toffee bits over the warm pretzels so they begin to melt and stick.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the toffee pretzels to cool completely on the baking sheet before breaking them apart into clusters for serving or packaging.
Notes
- Use light corn syrup, not dark, for the best flavor and color.
- Turning the pretzels every 15 minutes during baking ensures even coating and prevents burning.
- Cooling completely before breaking ensures the toffee sets properly for a crunchy texture.
- Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunch.
