These homemade buttermilk waffles are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, making them perfect for a delicious breakfast. They stack beautifully with syrup, butter, and your favorite toppings for a satisfying morning treat.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 waffles

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm buttermilk
  • ⅓ cup melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until homogeneously combined.
  2. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In another medium bowl, whisk the warm buttermilk and melted butter together. Add the eggs and stir until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Combine Mixtures: Pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with wet ingredients and whisk gently until just combined. It's okay if there are still some lumps. Then fold in the vanilla extract for flavor. Let the batter rest for 10 minutes to improve texture.
  4. Preheat and Grease Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron according to manufacturer instructions and grease it lightly to prevent sticking.
  5. Cook Waffles: Pour about ⅓ to ½ cup of batter onto the waffle iron, spreading to about ½ inch from the edges. Close and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp, usually until the iron signals they are done or about 4-5 minutes depending on your appliance.
  6. Serve: Carefully remove the waffles and serve immediately stacked high with syrup, fresh berries, or your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Resting the batter helps to make the waffles fluffier and crispier.
  • Make sure your waffle iron is well greased to prevent sticking and to achieve even browning.
  • Use warm buttermilk to help activate the baking soda for better rising.
  • Do not overmix the batter; some lumps are fine to keep the waffles tender.
  • Waffles are best served fresh but can be kept warm in a low oven if needed.
