Ingredients
Caramel Layer
- 11 ounces Kraft caramels, unwrapped
- ⅓ cup evaporated milk
Brownie Batter
- 18 ounces brownie mix
- 1 to 2 eggs (depending on brownie mix instructions)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 3 tablespoons water
Topping
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 9x9 inch baking dish with parchment paper and set it aside to prepare for the batter.
- Melt Caramels: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the unwrapped caramels and evaporated milk. Stir constantly for 5 to 7 minutes to prevent burning until the caramels are fully melted and the mixture is smooth and even.
- Prepare Brownie Batter: In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the brownie mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water until well combined following the package guidelines.
- Layer Brownie Batter: Spread about two-thirds of the brownie batter evenly into the prepared baking dish, creating the bottom layer of the dessert.
- Add Caramel Layer: Dollop the caramel mixture evenly across the top of the brownie layer. Do not spread it down into the brownie batter; keeping the caramel on top forms a luscious swirl.
- Top With Remaining Batter: Add spoonfuls of the remaining brownie batter over the caramel layer, dolloping it gently so some caramel peeks through.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
- Chocolate Chip Topping: As soon as you remove the brownies from the oven, sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot brownies to allow them to melt slightly.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before lifting out with the parchment paper and cutting into 16 squares to serve.
Notes
- Ensure to stir the caramel continuously while melting to prevent it from burning or sticking to the pan.
- You can adjust the number of eggs (1 to 2) based on your preferred brownie texture or the brownie mix instructions.
- If you want a more pronounced caramel swirl, avoid spreading the caramel – dolloping keeps it distinct.
- Use parchment paper for easy removal from the baking pan and cleaner edges.
- Cool completely before cutting to get clean squares and prevent the caramel from running.
