Ingredients
For the Meat Filling
- 1 lb ground beef (90% lean or leaner)
- ½ yellow or white onion, diced
- 1 tsp garlic salt or Lawry's Seasoned Salt
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
For the Biscuit Topping
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 Tbs unsalted butter
- ¾ cup whole or 2% milk
- 2 eggs
- 6 oz shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to prepare for baking the pie later.
- Cook Ground Beef Mixture: In a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the ground beef, diced onion, garlic salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Sauté while breaking up the beef into smaller pieces, cooking for about 8 minutes until beef is browned and onions are tender. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare Biscuit Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles gravel-sized pieces. Add eggs and milk, stirring with a fork or whisk until fully combined, with a slightly lumpy texture.
- Assemble Pie: Place the cooked beef mixture evenly into a 9-inch pie plate. Pour the biscuit mixture on top to cover the beef completely.
- Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the biscuit mixture.
- Bake: Bake the pie uncovered for 25 minutes at 375°F until the top is bubbling and lightly browned, and the biscuit crust is cooked through.
- Rest and Serve: Allow the pie to cool and rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with your favorite hamburger condiments.
Notes
- This pie forms its own biscuit-like crust, so no separate crust is necessary.
- You can substitute the cheddar cheese with your favorite melting cheese if desired.
- For a leaner dish, use 90% lean ground beef or higher.
- Ensure the biscuit topping mixture is slightly lumpy for the best texture.
- Letting the pie rest before slicing helps it set and slice cleanly.
