These Cheeseburger Sliders are an easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer perfect for parties or game day. Made with savory ground beef, melted American cheese, and a delicious homemade burger sauce, these sliders use King's Hawaiian rolls for a soft, sweet contrast. They bake together in the oven to melt the cheese perfectly and are topped with a buttery, sesame seed-glazed bun for extra flavor and texture.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 12 sliders

Ingredients

For the Ground Beef:

  • 1 Tbsp. softened butter
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 white onion, finely diced
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • pepper, to taste

For the Burgers:

  • 1 pack dinner rolls, 12 count (King's Hawaiian Savory Butter Rolls recommended)
  • 16 slices American cheese (Boar's Head recommended)
  • 3 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • Pinch of salt and garlic powder
  • 2 tsp. white sesame seeds

Burger Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. distilled white vinegar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter the bottom of a baking sheet with 1 tablespoon of softened butter, then set it aside to prepare your burger layers.
  2. Cook the ground beef mixture: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a medium sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the finely diced half white onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until translucent. Add 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook for 6-7 minutes until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  3. Season the beef: Stir in 2 cloves minced garlic, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and pepper to taste. Cook and mix for an additional minute to meld the flavors.
  4. Prepare the rolls: Slice the 12-count dinner rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom halves evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Make the butter glaze: Whisk together the 3 tablespoons melted butter with a pinch of salt and garlic powder to create a flavorful glaze for the buns.
  6. Assemble the sliders: Place 8 slices of American cheese evenly on the bottom rolls. Spoon and spread the cooked ground beef mixture on top of the cheese layer, then cover with the remaining 8 slices of cheese. Gently pat down the beef with a wooden spoon to help everything stick while still keeping the texture intact.
  7. Top and season: Place the top bun halves over the cheese. Brush each top bun generously with the melted butter mixture. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of white sesame seeds evenly over the buns for added flavor and crunch.
  8. Bake: Place the assembled sliders in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until they are warmed through and the cheese has melted completely. Watch carefully to prevent the buns from browning too much; cover loosely with foil if needed.
  9. Prepare the burger sauce: While the sliders bake, whisk together 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish, 2 teaspoons sugar, 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste in a bowl until smooth and combined.
  10. Serve: Remove the sliders from the oven. Optionally brush the tops with a little more melted butter for extra shine and flavor. Cut into individual sliders, serve warm with the homemade burger sauce, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use King's Hawaiian Savory Butter Rolls or other soft dinner rolls for the best texture and flavor.
  • Be careful not to overbake to avoid drying out the buns or burning the tops.
  • The cheese acts as a binder to keep the sliders intact when you cut and serve them.
  • Prepare extra burger sauce for dipping or spreading on sandwiches.
  • You can double the recipe easily for larger crowds.
  • For a sharper flavor, substitute American cheese with cheddar or your preferred melting cheese.
