This delicious Chocolate Frozen Yogurt recipe combines creamy vanilla yogurt, rich Dutch cocoa powder, and a touch of sweetness to create a smooth, refreshing frozen treat. Perfect for a healthy dessert, this homemade frozen yogurt is made easily with a blender and an ice cream maker, offering a delightful balance of chocolate flavor and creamy texture.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Frozen Yogurt Base

  • 2 cups vanilla yogurt (see note 1)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa powder (see note 2)

Instructions

  1. Blend: Add all the ingredients – vanilla yogurt, heavy cream, vanilla extract, salt, sugar, and Dutch process cocoa powder – to a large powerful blender. Process the mixture until it becomes completely smooth and uniform. If the mixture warms during blending, make sure to thoroughly chill it before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Freeze: Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker. Freeze it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, which usually takes about 35 to 45 minutes, until the mixture reaches the consistency of frozen yogurt. This step transforms the smooth blend into a creamy, scoopable dessert.
  3. Harden (Optional): For a firmer texture, transfer the frozen yogurt to an airtight container and place it in the freezer to further harden. Keep in mind that the longer the frozen yogurt is frozen, the icier the texture becomes, so monitor it depending on your preferred consistency.

Notes

  • Use good quality vanilla yogurt for the best flavor and creaminess. Greek yogurt can also work but may yield a thicker texture.
  • Dutch process cocoa powder provides a deeper, less acidic chocolate flavor compared to natural cocoa powder, enhancing the taste of the frozen yogurt.
  • If you do not have an ice cream maker, you can freeze the mixture and stir every 30 minutes to break up ice crystals for a smoother result, although texture may vary.
