Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 large eggs (Grade A)
- ½ cup sourdough discard
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup half and half (can substitute with milk)
- ¼ cup butter, melted
Topping
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking and set it aside.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until evenly mixed.
- Combine Oil and Sugar: In a large bowl, mix the vegetable oil and sugar until well combined to create a smooth base.
- Add Eggs and Flavorings: Add the eggs, sourdough discard, and vanilla extract to the oil and sugar mixture. Mix thoroughly until fully incorporated.
- Incorporate Dry Ingredients and Half and Half: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the half and half. Stir gently until just combined, taking care not to overmix to maintain a tender texture.
- Fill Donut Pan: Transfer the batter to a piping bag or a Ziplock bag with a corner cut off. Pipe the batter into the donut pan cavities, filling each about two-thirds full.
- Bake the Donuts: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.
- Cool Donuts: Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until evenly combined.
- Coat Donuts: Once cooled, dip each donut in the melted butter and then roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat evenly. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter to keep the donuts tender and light.
- If you don’t have half and half, whole milk can be used as a substitute.
- The sourdough discard adds a subtle tang and extra moisture to the donuts, making them unique.
- Use fresh baking powder and baking soda to ensure proper rise and fluffiness.
- These donuts are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
