Ingredients
French Toast Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- ⅔ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
Bread and Cooking
- 8 thick slices brioche bread (or any thick-sliced bread)
- Butter or oil, for the pan
To Serve
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt until fully combined and smooth to create the French toast batter.
- Heat the Skillet: Place a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and brush it with butter or oil to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Dip Bread Slices: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides thoroughly but not soaking them too long to avoid sogginess.
- Cook the Bread: Place the coated bread slices onto the heated skillet and cook for approximately 2 minutes on each side, or until both sides turn golden brown. Lower the heat as necessary to cook through without burning the bread. Repeat in batches, brushing butter on the skillet between batches to maintain flavor and prevent sticking.
- Serve: Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired, along with optional fresh fruit for an extra touch.
Notes
- Use thick-sliced bread like brioche or challah for the best texture and flavor.
- Adjust cinnamon and vanilla to taste for a more or less spiced flavor.
- Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can lead to steaming instead of frying.
- To keep cooked French toast warm, place on a baking sheet in a low oven (around 200°F/93°C) until all slices are done.
- French toast is best served immediately but can be kept for a short time and reheated in a toaster or oven.
