Ingredients
Vegetables
- 1 medium head green cabbage (about 2 lbs), cored and cut into 5-6 wedges
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, plus more for garnish
Dairy & Oils
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Seasonings
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the cabbage wedges: Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the cabbage wedges flat side down in the skillet and sear undisturbed for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown. Use tongs to carefully flip each wedge. Once seared, remove the cabbage to a plate and set aside.
- Sauté the onions: Lower the heat to medium and add the finely chopped onion to the same skillet. Cook the onion until it becomes soft and golden, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
- Add garlic and seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic and Cajun seasoning into the onion. Cook for an additional minute until the garlic is fragrant and the spices are well blended with the onions.
- Create the cream sauce: Pour the heavy cream into the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan to incorporate flavor. Let the mixture simmer gently for 2 to 3 minutes to slightly thicken the sauce.
- Incorporate cheese and herbs: Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. Continue to simmer the sauce for another minute until it becomes smooth and creamy.
- Finish cooking the cabbage: Place the seared cabbage wedges back into the skillet and spoon the creamy sauce over the top of each wedge. Partially cover the skillet and let the cabbage cook for another 5 minutes, or until fork-tender and heated through.
- Serve: Garnish the dish with additional fresh parsley and serve warm for the best flavor and texture. Enjoy this comforting, creamy cabbage dish as a side or light main course.
Notes
- Use a large skillet or sauté pan for even searing and cooking.
- For extra heat, increase Cajun seasoning or add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- Grate Parmesan cheese fresh for optimal flavor and melting quality.
- If preferred, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half for a lighter sauce, but the texture will be less creamy.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop.
