Ingredients
Tofu
- 12 oz block extra firm tofu (350 g)
Coating & Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Press tofu: Sandwich the block of tofu between paper towels and place two plates on top. Add a heavy object such as a 28 oz can on the upper plate to press out excess moisture. Let it press for at least 30 minutes to help the tofu crisp up better during cooking.
- Preheat air fryer: Set the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) so it is ready to cook the tofu evenly and quickly.
- Cut tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into cubes approximately 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch thick for even cooking and optimal crispiness.
- Coat tofu in oil and cornstarch: Toss the tofu cubes in avocado oil to lightly coat them, then toss in cornstarch which helps create the crispy outer layer during air frying.
- Add seasonings: Sprinkle paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt over the tofu cubes and toss well to ensure an even coating of the flavorful spices.
- Air fry tofu: Place the seasoned tofu in a single layer inside the air fryer basket and cook for 13 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes to ensure even cooking and browning on all sides.
- Check doneness: The tofu is done when the outside feels firm and crispy while the inside remains soft. Note that the tofu will harden slightly as it cools.
- Serve immediately: Enjoy the crispy tofu right after cooking for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Pressing the tofu is critical for achieving crispy texture by removing excess water.
- Use avocado oil or another neutral high smoke-point oil for best results.
- Shaking the basket during air frying ensures even browning on all sides.
- Adjust cook time slightly if using different air fryer models or tofu thickness.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or incorporate into salads, bowls, or stir-fries.
