This Easy Chinese Beef Stir Fry is a quick and flavorful dinner packed with tender beef, crisp vegetables, and a glossy, savory sauce. Made with simple ingredients and cooked in under 10 minutes, it’s the perfect recipe to satisfy your takeout cravings at home.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This stir fry has everything: tender beef that melts in your mouth, colorful vegetables with just the right crunch, and a balanced, umami-rich sauce. The velveting technique ensures the beef stays juicy and tender, just like in your favorite Chinese restaurant. With minimal prep and fast cooking time, it’s a weeknight winner the whole family will love.

Easy Chinese Beef Stir Fry

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

For Velveting the Beef:

  • 7 oz (200 g) beef rump steak or flank, thinly sliced

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons light or all-purpose soy sauce (not dark soy sauce)

  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce

  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium chicken broth

  • ½ tablespoon rice vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon white sugar

  • ½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil

  • Pinch of white or black pepper

For the Sauce Thickener:

  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch

  • ½ cup water, divided

For the Stir Fry:

  • 1 ½ tablespoons peanut oil

  • 1 garlic clove, finely minced

  • ½ small onion, sliced

  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced ⅓-inch thick

  • 1 small carrot, peeled, halved lengthwise, and thinly sliced on the diagonal

  • 2 bok choy, leaves separated and stems sliced

  • 2 green onions, cut into 1 ½-inch pieces (white and green parts separated)

To Serve:

  • Steamed white rice

  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Directions

1. Velvet the Beef

Place the sliced beef in a bowl. Sprinkle with baking soda and toss to coat evenly. Let it sit for 20 minutes (not longer). Rinse the beef under running water, drain well, and pat dry with paper towels.

2. Make the Sauce

In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients. Remove 1 ½ tablespoons of the sauce and toss it with the beef to marinate.
To the remaining sauce, whisk in cornstarch until smooth, then mix in the ½ cup water.

3. Stir Fry

Heat peanut oil in a large wok or non-stick skillet over high heat.
Add the onion and garlic and stir-fry for 10 seconds.
Add the marinated beef and stir-fry until it's no longer red but not fully cooked through.
Add the bell pepper, carrot, bok choy stems, and white parts of the green onions. Stir-fry for 1 minute.
Pour in the sauce mixture and cook, stirring, until it thickens and bubbles.
Add the bok choy leaves and green onion tops. Toss for 30 seconds to 1 minute until wilted and glossy.

4. Serve

Serve immediately over steamed white rice and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

Servings and timing

Servings: 3–4
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes
Total Time: 23 minutes

Variations

  • Spicy version: Add a sliced chili or ½ teaspoon of chili garlic sauce to the stir fry for heat.

  • Low-carb option: Serve over cauliflower rice or skip the rice entirely.

  • Different vegetables: Use broccoli, snap peas, or mushrooms if you don’t have bok choy.

  • Gluten-free: Use tamari instead of soy sauce and check labels on oyster sauce and broth.

  • Chicken version: Swap the beef for thinly sliced chicken breast or thighs.

Storage/Reheating

Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: Not recommended, as the vegetables may become mushy.
Reheating: Reheat gently in a skillet over medium heat or microwave in short intervals, stirring occasionally.

FAQs

What does velveting the beef do?

Velveting tenderizes the beef and gives it that silky, tender texture you find in restaurant stir fries.

Can I skip the velveting step?

You can, but the beef won’t be as tender or restaurant-quality.

Can I use another cut of beef?

Yes, any quick-cooking cut like sirloin or tenderloin works well.

What is the difference between light and dark soy sauce?

Light soy sauce is saltier and used for seasoning; dark soy sauce is thicker and used more for color.

Can I substitute oyster sauce?

Yes, use hoisin sauce or a mix of soy sauce and a touch of sugar if needed.

What oil should I use?

Peanut oil is ideal for high heat stir-frying, but vegetable or canola oil also works.

How do I slice beef thinly?

Partially freeze it for 20–30 minutes before slicing—it’s much easier to get thin, even slices.

Can I make this dish vegetarian?

Yes! Use tofu or mushrooms instead of beef and vegetable broth in the sauce.

Do I have to use a wok?

No, a large non-stick skillet or frying pan will work just fine.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes, but stir fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can steam rather than sear the ingredients.

Conclusion

This Easy Chinese Beef Stir Fry is everything you love about takeout—fast, flavorful, and satisfying—but made healthier and fresher right in your own kitchen. With tender beef, crisp vegetables, and a glossy, umami-packed sauce, it's a go-to dinner that delivers bold flavor with minimal effort. Perfect for busy weeknights, this stir fry is a delicious way to bring Chinese-inspired cooking to your table.

These rich and fudgy mini brownie bites are made from scratch with cocoa powder, melted butter, and a touch of malted milk powder for added depth. Perfectly portioned in a mini muffin pan, they're ideal for parties, snacking, or satisfying your chocolate cravings.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: About 24 mini brownie bites

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (130g)
  • ¾ cup + 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (80g)
  • 2 tablespoons malted milk powder (20g, optional)
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips or 4 oz. chopped baking chocolate
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 5 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a mini muffin pan with cake goop (see notes) and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over low heat. Stir in the sugar until smooth and emulsified. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Stir in the canola oil and vanilla extract until fully combined with no separation.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, malted milk powder, and salt into the wet mixture. Stir gently with a rubber spatula just until no dry streaks remain.
  6. Fold in the mini chocolate chips or chopped baking chocolate.
  7. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared mini muffin pan, about 1 ½ tablespoons per well.
  8. Bake for 14–16 minutes, or until set and slightly crackled on top.
  9. Cool completely before removing from the pan. Use a paring knife to release if needed.

Notes

  • Cake goop (a mix of equal parts flour, oil, and shortening) is the most effective method for greasing pans without sticking.
  • Do not overbake — they continue to firm up slightly after removal from the oven.
  • Mini muffin liners can be used but may stick slightly to the brownies.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
