This Easy Fig Chutney recipe combines fresh or dried figs with brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and warm cinnamon spices to create a sweet and tangy condiment. Perfect as a flavorful accompaniment for cheese boards, roasted meats, or sandwiches, this chutney is simmered to develop rich flavors and then pulsed to your preferred texture.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients

Chutney Ingredients

  • 12 ounces figs (fresh or dried)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Figs: With a small knife, remove the stems from the figs and slice them in half to prepare for cooking.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Place the figs, brown sugar, water, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon) into a medium-sized saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring every few minutes until the sugar dissolves and the mixture starts to form small bubbles.
  3. Simmer the Chutney: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly.
  4. Blend to Desired Texture: Remove the saucepan from heat. If using a cinnamon stick, discard it. Allow the chutney to cool for 10 to 15 minutes, then transfer it to a food processor or blender. Pulse 2 to 5 times to reach your preferred texture, whether chunky or smooth.
  5. Store the Chutney: Pour the finished chutney into airtight jars. Let it cool to room temperature before refrigerating, where it can be stored and enjoyed over several days.

Notes

  • Use fresh figs when in season for a bright, fruity flavor; dried figs provide a sweeter, more concentrated taste.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of brown sugar according to your preference.
  • For a spicier chutney, add a pinch of chili flakes during the simmering step.
  • Store chutney in the refrigerator in airtight containers for up to two weeks.
  • This chutney pairs excellently with cheese platters, grilled meats, or served as a spread on sandwiches.
