These epic homemade brownies are rich, fudgy, and deeply chocolatey with swirls of dulce de leche, chocolate chips, and your favorite mix-ins. Whether you call them salted caramel brownies or just the best brownie recipe ever, they’re indulgent and unforgettable.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 24 brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1½ cups unsalted butter
  • 13 ounces dulce de leche
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped nuts or mix-ins (e.g., toffee bits, crushed Oreos, mint chips)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl or double boiler, melt the butter, chopped dark chocolate, and dulce de leche together. If using a microwave, heat for 60 seconds, stir, then repeat in 30-second increments until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and instant coffee granules.
  4. Whisk eggs, sugar, and vanilla into the slightly cooled chocolate mixture until smooth and combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, whisking until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips and your choice of chopped nuts or other mix-ins.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top evenly.
  8. Bake for 35–45 minutes. Begin checking at 35 minutes—insert a toothpick into the center; it should come out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow brownies to cool completely in the pan.
  10. Once cooled, cut into 12 large, 18 medium, or 24 small squares. Wipe the knife clean between cuts for neat edges.
  11. Use a spatula to carefully remove brownies from the pan and serve.

Notes

  • Do not overbake—brownies continue to cook as they cool.
  • Instant coffee enhances the chocolate flavor—omit if preferred.
  • Customize with your favorite mix-ins like white chocolate chips, crushed candies, or caramel chunks.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or freeze for longer storage.
