Ingredients
For the Roll-Ups:
- 8 slices white bread (or your preferred bread, like sourdough or whole wheat)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for buttering the bread)
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella)
- 1/2 cup caramelized onions (from about 1 medium onion)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the French Onion Dip:
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon French onion soup mix (or use homemade French onion seasoning)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Thinly slice the onion and add it to the pan. Cook slowly while stirring occasionally for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are golden and caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and set aside to cool slightly.
- Make the French onion dip: In a small bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, French onion soup mix, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well and adjust seasoning to taste. Set aside for dipping.
- Assemble the roll-ups: Trim the crusts off the bread slices to make rolling easier. Flatten each slice with a rolling pin. Spread a thin layer of butter on each slice. Add a small amount of caramelized onions on each piece, followed by a generous layer of shredded cheese.
- Roll up the bread: Carefully roll each slice tightly into a roll-up. Secure with toothpicks to hold together during frying.
- Fry the roll-ups: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and melt 1-2 tablespoons of butter. Add the roll-ups seam side down. Cook 2-3 minutes per side, turning gently to brown all sides evenly and make them crispy. Use tongs to flip carefully.
- Serve: Remove toothpicks, slice the roll-ups in half if desired, and serve warm with the French onion dip. Enjoy the crispy, cheesy, and savory roll-ups!
Notes
- You can use different types of cheese such as Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella for varied flavor.
- For a lower-fat version, use light sour cream and reduced-fat cheese.
- Make sure not to overcook the onions to prevent bitterness.
- The roll-ups can be prepared ahead and fried just before serving.
- Use toothpicks to keep the roll-ups intact while frying to avoid unraveling.
