Ingredients
Meatballs
- 1 pound hamburger meat
- ⅔ cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg, whisked
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 can French onion soup
Onions
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons oil
Assembly
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 18 slices Swiss cheese (or Gruyere cheese, sliced)
- 1 12-count pack Hawaiian sweet rolls
Instructions
- Mix the meatball ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the hamburger meat, bread crumbs, whisked egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the egg is fully incorporated and the mixture is uniform.
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the meatballs.
- Form meatballs: Using a spring release scoop or your hands, shape the meat mixture into evenly sized balls suitable for sliders.
- Bake the meatballs in soup: Place the meatballs in a baking dish, pour the French onion soup evenly over them, and bake for 25 minutes at 350°F until fully cooked.
- Caramelize the onions: While the meatballs cook, heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 15 minutes until they are deeply caramelized and soft. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the rolls: Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally. Spread softened butter on each cut side, then place the rolls butter side up on a cookie sheet.
- Toast the rolls: Once the meatballs are done, remove them from the oven and set aside. Turn the oven to low broil and place the buttered rolls in the oven for 3-5 minutes until the butter melts and the tops of the rolls start to toast.
- Assemble sliders: Remove the rolls from the oven (keeping the oven on low broil). Place one or more meatballs on the bottom halves of the rolls depending on size, add a generous portion of caramelized onions on top, and then cover with slices of Swiss cheese.
- Broil to melt cheese: Return the assembled bottoms with meatballs, onions, and cheese to the oven on low broil. Broil until the cheese is golden, bubbly, and melted, watching closely to avoid burning.
- Finish and serve: Remove the sliders from the oven, top each with the other half of the roll, press gently, and serve warm.
Notes
- For best flavor, use freshly ground beef with moderate fat content (80/20) to keep meatballs moist.
- If you prefer, Gruyere cheese can be substituted for Swiss cheese for a more authentic French onion flavor.
- You can prepare the caramelized onions a day ahead and reheat gently before assembling.
- Adjust the number of meatballs per slider depending on their size and your preference for slider heftiness.
- Keep a close eye while broiling to prevent cheese from burning.
- These sliders are best served immediately to enjoy the contrast of warm meatballs and soft rolls.
