Ingredients
Butter Sugar Cinnamon Spread
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Egg Mixture
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Roll-Ups
- 8 slices soft white bread, crusts cut off
- 3 tablespoons butter, for sauté pan
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the cinnamon butter mixture: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 3 tablespoons of butter until just melted. Stir in 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon with a fork until a smooth and spreadable mixture forms. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Make the egg custard: In a shallow bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1/4 cup milk until fully combined. Set aside.
- Mix the cinnamon sugar coating: In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons granulated sugar with 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Set aside for finishing the roll-ups.
- Prepare the bread: Trim crusts from each slice of bread. Using a rolling pin, roll each slice out to about 1/8-inch thickness to make them thin and pliable.
- Assemble the roll-ups: Spread a thin layer of the prepared butter-sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly over each rolled-out slice of bread. Roll up each slice tightly from one edge to form neat rolls. Repeat with all slices.
- Cook the roll-ups: Heat 3 tablespoons of butter in a large non-stick sauté pan over medium heat. If your pan is smaller, use 2 tablespoons of butter and cook the roll-ups in two batches. Dip each roll-up one at a time into the egg mixture, ensuring it's evenly coated, then place it seam side down in the hot pan. Sauté each roll-up for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crisp on the outside.
- Finish and serve: Remove the cooked roll-ups to a work surface and immediately sprinkle generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Serve warm with maple syrup on the side for dipping or drizzling.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh soft white bread for easy rolling.
- Make sure the butter mixture is not too hot when spreading to avoid soggy bread.
- If preferred, you can substitute maple syrup with honey or jam for serving.
- Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your stove and pan thickness; watch for a golden exterior.
- These can be made ahead and gently reheated in a pan or toaster oven before serving.
