Ingredients
Oat Streusel Topping
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup oats
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 stick butter (cold)
- 1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped
Apple Filling
- 4 Granny Smith apples
- 4 Fuji apples
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the apple crisp.
- Make the Oat Streusel Topping. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and sea salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry knife until the mixture resembles couscous-sized crumbs.
- Add the Walnuts. Gently fold the finely chopped walnuts into the streusel mixture with a rubber spatula, then place the bowl in the freezer to keep the butter cold and the topping firm.
- Prepare the Apples. Peel and quarter the Granny Smith and Fuji apples. Remove the cores, then slice each quarter into thick pieces about 1/2 inch thick.
- Mix the Filling. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until everything is evenly coated.
- Assemble in Baking Dish. Transfer the spiced apple mixture into a deep 12"x8" or regular 13"x9" baking casserole dish. No greasing needed.
- Add the Streusel Topping. Evenly sprinkle the chilled oat streusel over the apples, then gently press it down to create an even layer.
- Bake the Apple Crisp. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45 to 55 minutes until the topping is lightly browned, edges caramelized, and apples are tender. Avoid covering with foil to allow the topping to brown.
- Serve. Remove from the oven and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce for the ultimate classic dessert experience.
Notes
- Using a mix of tart Granny Smith and sweet Fuji apples provides a balanced flavor.
- Keep the butter cold in the streusel to achieve a crumbly, crisp topping.
- If you prefer a nut-free dessert, simply omit the walnuts from the topping.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce for an indulgent touch.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
