Ingredients
Cookie Dough
- Prepared cut-out cookie dough (amount as per your recipe)
Frosting
- Buttercream frosting (enough to frost 25 cookies)
- Red food coloring
- White food coloring (optional, as buttercream is naturally white)
- Blue food coloring
Tools & Accessories
- Circle cookie cutters
- Wilton 3-color coupler
- Size 1M piping tip
- Disposable decorating bags (3)
- Rubber band
Instructions
- Prepare and bake cookies: Make your favorite cut-out cookie dough according to the recipe, chill it thoroughly, then use circle cookie cutters to cut out the shapes. Bake the cookies until done and allow them to cool completely before decorating.
- Tint the frosting: Prepare buttercream frosting, ensuring it is smooth and spreadable. Divide it into three portions and tint each portion a different color: red, white (or leave natural), and blue using food coloring.
- Assemble the piping setup: Attach the Wilton 3-color coupler to a size 1M piping tip. Fill three separate disposable decorating bags with each colored frosting. Insert the filled bags into the coupler and secure them tightly together with a rubber band to hold everything in place.
- Pipe the swirls: Using gentle pressure, pipe tri-colored swirls onto each cooled cookie. The buttercream will hold a beautiful 3D shape due to the technique and coupler. For best results, refrigerate the decorated cookies until serving to keep the frosting firm and perfectly in place.
Notes
- Buttercream frosting is preferred over royal icing for better 3D shape retention.
- Chilling the cookies after baking is crucial to prevent the frosting from melting.
- The Wilton 3-color coupler allows for piping multiple colors simultaneously for a striking swirl effect.
- Keep finished cookies refrigerated if not serving immediately to maintain frosting texture.
- Use a size 1M piping tip for classic swirl patterns.
