This homemade Sesame Chicken recipe delivers crispy, tender chicken coated in a rich, savory-sweet sauce that's better than takeout. It's easy to make, packed with bold flavor, and finished with toasted sesame seeds for the perfect crunch.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • Chicken:
  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cubed
  • Canola or vegetable oil, for frying
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • For the Batter:
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dry sherry
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 dash sesame oil
  • For the Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 3/4 cup white sugar (or 1/2 cup honey as substitute)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, 2 tbsp cornstarch, baking soda, and baking powder. Add soy sauce, dry sherry, water, vegetable oil, and a dash of sesame oil. Stir until smooth. Add chicken pieces, stir to coat, cover, and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  2. Fry the Chicken: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C). Fry the battered chicken in small batches for 3–4 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. Make the Sauce: In a large skillet or wok, bring chicken broth, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, Sriracha, and garlic to a boil.
  4. Dissolve 1/4 cup cornstarch in 1/4 cup water and stir into the boiling sauce. Simmer for about 2 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Combine: Add the fried chicken to the sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  6. Serve: Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and enjoy hot over rice or with vegetables.

Notes

  • For a refined sugar-free version, substitute 1/2 cup honey in place of 3/4 cup white sugar.
  • Use chicken thighs for an even juicier version.
  • Pair with steamed rice and broccoli for a full meal.
  • Best served immediately for crispy texture, but leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
