Ingredients
Shrimp and Seasoning
- 1 pound medium shrimp (shelled & deveined, tails removed)
- 1 (1 ounce) packet taco seasoning (or 2 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (about ½ lime)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Slaw
- 1 cup shredded green cabbage
- ¼ cup shredded red cabbage
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (optional)
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
Tortillas
- 8 small corn tortillas (or flour tortillas, 6-inch size)
Instructions
- Prepare the Slaw: In a medium bowl, combine the shredded green and red cabbage with mayonnaise, chopped cilantro, lime juice, and ground cumin. Season with salt to taste. Mix well, then refrigerate until ready to serve to allow flavors to meld.
- Season the Shrimp: In a separate bowl, toss the peeled and deveined shrimp with taco seasoning, fresh lime juice, and garlic powder until evenly coated, ensuring each shrimp absorbs the flavors.
- Cook the Shrimp: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Arrange the seasoned shrimp in a single layer and cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side until they turn pink and are cooked through. Use tongs to carefully flip the shrimp for even cooking.
- Warm the Tortillas: Warm the corn tortillas over an open flame or follow package instructions to make them pliable and enhance flavor.
- Assemble the Tacos: Place a generous amount of prepared cabbage slaw on each warm tortilla, top with cooked shrimp, and add any additional desired toppings. Serve immediately for best taste.
Notes
- For homemade taco seasoning, mix chili powder, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Using fresh lime juice is key for bright flavor in both the shrimp and the slaw.
- Adjust the spice level of the slaw by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper if desired.
- The slaw can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
- Use flour tortillas if corn tortillas are not available, but traditional corn tortillas complement the flavors best.
- Garnish with extra cilantro, sliced avocado, or a drizzle of hot sauce for variety.
