  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 10 pieces

Ingredients

Bread and Garlic Butter

  • 1 (14 ounce) loaf Italian bread
  • 8 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • Kosher salt (a couple pinches)

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup petite diced yellow onion
  • 3/4 cup petite diced green bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef (85/15)
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste

Topping

  • 6 ounces shredded cheese (sharp cheddar + mozzarella blend)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Bread: Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice the loaf of Italian bread in half lengthwise to create two equal halves. Place the bread cut side up on a baking sheet.
  2. Make Garlic Butter: In a food processor, combine softened butter, fresh parsley, garlic cloves, and a couple pinches of kosher salt. Process until the mixture is smooth and well-blended.
  3. Spread Garlic Butter and Bake: Evenly spread the garlic butter mixture over the cut sides of both bread halves. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges of the bread are toasty and golden brown.
  4. Cook Vegetables: While the bread bakes, heat olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and green bell pepper with a pinch of salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until vegetables soften.
  5. Add Garlic and Tomato Paste: Stir in the finely minced garlic and tomato paste, cooking for approximately 30 seconds, stirring constantly to release the flavors.
  6. Brown the Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the pan along with a couple pinches of salt and pepper. Cook while crumbling the meat with a spatula until browned and fully cooked through.
  7. Simmer Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and additional salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to medium-low and let the mixture gently simmer for 8-10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  8. Assemble and Broil: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the baked garlic bread halves. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the sloppy joe topping. Place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese melts and starts to turn golden brown.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, slice into pieces, and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious Sloppy Joe Garlic Cheese Bread!

Notes

  • The sloppy joe mixture can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days before assembling the bread.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the meat mixture while cooking.
  • You can substitute Italian bread with French bread or a sturdy baguette if preferred.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting and flavor compared to pre-shredded cheese.
  • If you don’t have a broiler, place the assembled bread back into a 400°F oven for 5-7 minutes to melt the cheese.
