Ingredients
Milk Base
- 1 cup Whole Milk or substitute with full fat coconut milk
- 2 tablespoons Heavy Cream (optional), or substitute with coconut cream
- ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon Kosher Salt, to taste
- 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar (optional), add to taste
Flavorings & Spices
- ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract or ¼ teaspoon almond extract
- ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon Cayenne Pepper, or to taste
Chocolate
- 2.5 to 2.7 ounces Dark Mexican Chocolate (such as Taza), chopped; preferably 72% cocoa or higher. Substitute with 2.5 ounces high quality dark chocolate chips or bar cut into small pieces
Coffee
- 4 shots Espresso
Instructions
- Heat Milk and Cream: Place a saucepan over medium heat and add the whole milk, heavy cream (if using), brown sugar (if using), and kosher salt. Stir or whisk gently to dissolve all solids. Remove from heat just before the milk reaches a simmer to prevent scorching.
- Add Flavorings and Spices: Stir in the vanilla extract (or almond extract), cinnamon, and cayenne pepper into the warm milk mixture, whisking well to combine the spices evenly.
- Melt the Chocolate: Add the chopped Mexican dark chocolate to the saucepan and let it sit for about 3 minutes to soften. Then whisk continuously until the mixture is smooth, fully combined, and the chocolate is completely melted. Taste and adjust the seasoning by adding more cayenne or sugar if desired.
- Brew Espresso: While the chocolate is melting, brew 4 shots of espresso using your preferred method. A stovetop espresso pot is recommended for authentic taste but any espresso machine will work.
- Assemble the Drink: Pour 2 shots of hot espresso into your favorite mug. Top with half of the spicy chocolate milk mixture and stir gently to combine. Enjoy immediately for the best rich and spicy mocha flavor.
- Repeat Serving: For the second serving, pour the remaining 2 shots of espresso into another mug, top with the remaining chocolate mixture, stir, and serve.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, substitute whole milk and heavy cream with full fat coconut milk and coconut cream.
- Adjust the cayenne pepper according to your spice tolerance to make the drink more or less fiery.
- Using high-quality dark chocolate with at least 72% cocoa gives the best richness and depth of flavor.
- The drink is best enjoyed immediately while warm for optimal flavor and texture.
- You can swap brown sugar with other sweeteners like maple syrup or honey as preferred.
