Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- ⅔ cup vegetable oil
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup finely chopped fresh strawberries (for batter)
Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 ½ tablespoons milk
- ¼ cup finely chopped fresh strawberries (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350 °F (177 °C) and generously spray a donut baking pan with non-stick spray to prevent sticking during baking.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt until fully combined for an even distribution of leavening and flavor.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a large glass measuring cup or bowl, whisk the vegetable oil, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and completely blended.
- Incorporate wet and dry: Slowly pour the wet mixture into the bowl with dry ingredients, whisking gently until just combined, making sure to scrape the bowl’s sides and bottom to incorporate all ingredients without overmixing.
- Add strawberries: Fold in the ¼ cup of finely chopped fresh strawberries carefully to distribute without breaking them down too much, maintaining fresh fruit texture.
- Prepare piping bag: Fit a piping bag with a large round tip or use a large Ziplock bag with a small corner cut off. Spoon the batter into the bag, ensuring batter doesn’t leak out the hole prematurely.
- Fill donut molds: Pipe the batter into each donut mold cavity, filling approximately two-thirds full to allow for rise without overflow.
- Remove air bubbles: Gently tap the filled tray against the counter 4-5 times to release any trapped air bubbles, which helps create a smooth texture.
- Bake donuts: Bake in the preheated oven for 13-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the thickest part of a donut comes out clean, indicating doneness.
- Cool donuts: Remove the pan from the oven and let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before carefully inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely to room temperature.
- Prepare glaze: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth and lump-free. Gently fold in the remaining ¼ cup of finely chopped strawberries to add flavor and color to the glaze.
- Glaze donuts: Once the donuts have completely cooled, dip the top side of each donut into the glaze, then place them face up on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set and harden slightly.
- Serve: Enjoy your fresh strawberry buttermilk donuts immediately or store for later to savor their moist, fruity goodness.
Notes
- Use fresh ripe strawberries for the best flavor and texture in both batter and glaze.
- Filling the donut molds 2/3 full prevents spills and ensures an even rise.
- Allow donuts to cool completely before glazing to prevent melting the glaze.
- Store glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- For a thicker glaze, reduce the milk slightly; for a thinner glaze, add a little more milk.
