Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh or frozen strawberries, hulled and chopped
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the chopped strawberries, maple syrup, fresh lemon juice, and vanilla extract to begin forming your compote base.
- Simmer the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir the ingredients occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
- Cook Until Soft: Allow the strawberries to simmer for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they become soft and release their juices, forming a delicious syrupy consistency.
- Remove and Cool: Take the saucepan off the heat and let the compote cool slightly. It will thicken as it cools, reaching the perfect texture for serving warm or chilled.
Notes
- You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries depending on availability; frozen strawberries may yield a slightly thinner compote.
- Adjust sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup according to your taste preference.
- Store leftover compote in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- This compote freezes well—just thaw it in the refrigerator before use.
- Serve warm over pancakes, waffles, or ice cream, or cold as a spread on toast.
