A comforting and classic Sweet Potato Pecan Casserole featuring creamy mashed sweet potatoes blended with warm spices, baked under a crunchy pecan streusel topping. Perfect as a side dish for holiday meals or any special occasion.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Mixture

  • 4 lbs. sweet potatoes, peeled and halved crosswise
  • 1/2 cup granulated or cane sugar
  • 4 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Pecan Streusel Topping

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (light or dark)
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Boil Sweet Potatoes: Place the halved sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-40 minutes until tender and easily pierced with a fork. Drain well.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Mash Sweet Potatoes and Combine Ingredients: Transfer the drained sweet potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Mash them until smooth. Add sugar, beaten eggs, melted butter, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and kosher salt. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. Fill Baking Dish: Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Make Pecan Streusel Topping: In a medium bowl, combine flour and brown sugar. Cut the cold cubed butter into the mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped pecans, then sprinkle this topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.
  6. Bake the Casserole: Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure sweet potatoes are fully cooked and soft before mashing for the best texture.
  • You can prepare the pecan streusel topping ahead of time to save time on baking day.
  • For an extra rich flavor, consider using dark brown sugar for the topping.
  • This casserole can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
  • Use fresh pecans and cold butter for the best streusel texture.
