This old-fashioned Tomato Jam is sweet, tangy, and bursting with slow-cooked flavor. Made with ripe tomatoes, brown sugar, and warm spices, it’s the perfect savory-sweet spread for toast, sandwiches, cheese boards, and more.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ripe tomatoes (Roma or plum), chopped with loose seeds removed
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Chop the tomatoes and remove any loose seeds. Grate the fresh ginger.
  2. In a medium saucepot, combine all ingredients.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 to 1½ hours, stirring regularly to prevent burning.
  5. When the jam is thick and glossy, remove from heat.
  6. Transfer to clean jars. Store in the refrigerator, freezer, or process in a water bath for canning if desired.

Notes

  • Use ripe, flavorful tomatoes for the best results.
  • Stir frequently during the last 30 minutes to prevent sticking or burning.
  • For a smoother texture, blend the jam before storing.
  • Serve with cheese boards, grilled meats, or as a spread for sandwiches and toast.
