Ingredients
Pizza Dough
- 1 pound pizza dough
Toppings & Seasonings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 pound sliced fresh mozzarella cheese (divided)
- ¼ cup parmesan cheese (plus more for serving)
- 1 pound vine-ripened, Roma, or heirloom tomatoes (or a combination)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6-10 fresh basil leaves (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) to ensure it reaches the ideal temperature for a crispy crust.
- Prepare the Pan: Lightly brush a 16-inch pizza pan or cookie sheet with olive oil or use non-stick spray. Alternatively, line the pan with parchment paper that can withstand 450°F.
- Roll Out Dough: Roll the pizza dough out into a thin ¼-inch circle that covers the pan completely, allowing an even base for your toppings.
- Season the Dough: Brush the dough with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges to form the crust. Sprinkle evenly with minced garlic and dried oregano for aromatic flavor.
- Add Cheese Base: Layer half of the fresh mozzarella slices evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ to 1-inch border. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top to add a savory tang.
- Prepare Tomatoes: Slice tomatoes about ¼-inch thick after removing the seeds by scooping them out or gently squeezing. Arrange the tomato slices evenly over the cheese, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Top with Remaining Cheese: Distribute the remaining mozzarella slices evenly on top of the tomatoes to ensure a melty finish.
- Bake: Place the assembled pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the pizza to cool for 5-10 minutes after baking to set the toppings. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, slice, and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a crispier crust, bake the pizza on a preheated pizza stone if available.
- If you prefer a more robust tomato flavor, use a combination of heirloom tomatoes for sweetness and Roma tomatoes for firmness.
- Adding fresh basil at the end preserves its aroma and color.
- To reduce sogginess, removing tomato seeds is key to eliminating excess moisture.
- Parmesan cheese can be sprinkled again after baking for an extra cheesy finish.
